 Rounds 9 & 10 Race Report

Castle Combe

After rounds 7 and 8 at Oulton Park the car was taken to Gotboost Performance Tuning in Bridgend and run on the rolling road to check the engine power. The results from the test showed that the engine needed re-timing, an issue that the engineering team resolved ahead of the one day event at Castle Combe. 1082592 673920759303990_349113464_o

The team arrived at the circuit on Friday and with the sun shining the car was prepared and the team walked the track. The weather took a turn for the worse in the evening with thunderstorms drawing in as the students attempted to sleep in their tents.

On Saturday the car passed scrutineering and went out on a dry track for qualifying. After posting a series of quick laps it was disappointing to see that the car was not matching the pace of our competitors and Tim qualified 8th in class, 15th on the grid.

Whilst preparing for the first race of the day it became apparent that the weather was starting to change. Drizzle dampened the track ahead of the session and at the last minute the car was put on wet tyres and sent out on to the grid which was a 50/50 split of wet and slick tyres. The rain continued as the team waited anxiously for the race to begin.

Tim had a brilliant start to the race and after 1 lap had gained a record 9 places and was up to 6th overall. After a brilliant performance in the wet, the excitement between the team on the pit wall was building as it became apparent Tim was on for his first podium finish with the team.

Once the car was returned to the team bay, work began to repair the wing that had received a knock at the beginning of the race. The weather continued to deteriorate, however the team’s spirits were not dampened and the car was soon back together ready to fight again.

Tim started the second race from the back of the grid on wet tyres and once again had a brilliant start in extremely difficult conditions. Tim finished the race 4th in class, another amazing result to round off one of the most successful days for the team.

The team flocked to the Monoposto reward ceremony to see Tim receive his 3rd place trophy and an award for Driver of the Day for his remarkable performance in the conditions. Two trophies in one day and a very happy team!

A number of sponsors had attended the race which was effectively Swansea Motorsport’s ‘home’ round. Tim and the team performed extremely well and really showed sponsors Pic- Up Spares and Route 303 and Route 38 Restaurant what their support helps us to achieve. The team returned to Swansea and their various home towns across the UK. Unwilling to rest on their laurels, work has already begun preparing the car for the next round, a two day event at the home of British Motor Racing, Silverstone.
