Rounds 7 & 8 Race Report

Oulton Park International

On the 11th Jul20130712 165048y, the Monoposto team travelled up to Oulton Park, choosing to test at the circuit on the Friday ahead of Saturday’s racing. The engineering team had been working on the car since the previous round at Brands Hatch and everyone was pleased to see the car running well on Friday. The sessions gave Tim the opportunity to learn the circuit, having never raced here before.

The team had a late night on Friday, staying up until the early hours to makes changes to the car ahead of the double- header event on Saturday. The hard work paid off with the car passing scrutineering.

The qualifying session began at 9am in the bright sunlight and high temperatures. Tim posted 3 laps, picking up the pace each time, then came in to allow the car to cool down. The high temperatures at the circuit were affecting tyre performance for most cars out on the grid and Tim qualified 14th in class, 20th on the grid.

FB IMG_13736419473967791Race 1 began at 11:50am with Tim having another brilliant start to the race making up 4 places in the first lap. Tim’s lap times were improving throughout the race and he was running 17th on the grid heading into the penultimate lap. Unfortunately an issue with the throttle cable resulted in the car losing power completely on acceleration and as a result Tim pulled off track.

Once the car was back in the team pit, the engineers set to work replacing the throttle cable and setting the car up for the second race in the afternoon. The second race was scheduled for 3:15pm, with Tim starting 15th on the grid based on the second quickest lap

Once again, Tim had a brilliant start to the race moving up into 13th position. After the first lap the safety car was deployed as a result of a car stopped on track, and stayed out for 3 laps. The safety car came in and the racing resumed with 6 minutes remaining. With the grid now bunched up Tim lost 2 places within the remaining 4 laps as the tyres began to suffer in the heat, finishing 15th on the grid and 11th in class. The result was a great accomplishment for Tim in his debut at Oulton Park and for the team, having had little sleep throughout the weekend times in the qualifying session.

The team packed up and left Oulton to return to Swansea to enjoy the nice weather on Sunday. Work is already underway for the next round, another double- header at Castle Combe. The weekend will be considered as the team’s home round!
