Brands Hatch Indy

DSC 0047The Swansea Met Monoposto team travelled to Brands Hatch for the second time in the 2013 season. Arriving on Friday evening after a long journey the team prepared the car for the two sessions on Saturday.

On Saturday morning the car headed out on track for the first qualifying session. Unfortunately it was immediately obvious that the car was down on power and from the pit lane it sounded like the engine was misfiring. Tim qualified 13th in class and the engineers got straight to work trying to find the issue.

After a number of hours working on the car the engineering team had investigated the electrical system and started to work on the fuel system. However after 4 laps of the first race it was apparent that this was not the issue and Tim retired from the race to prevent further damage.

The team made a decision to stay at Brands Hatch and work throughout the evening to solve the problem. Troubleshooting continued through Sunday morning. After Sunday’s qualifying the team had an epiphany and decided to check the air intake.

On closer inspection the issue became clear, as the air filter adaptor (a large piece of rubber in the shape of a band) had been sucked into the inlet manifold and down into port number one. After removing the rubber and running some basic checks it was obvious the issue had been solved.

The team were now looking forward to the final race of the weekend and Tim had a brilliant start from the back of the grid. Having made up 3 places into the first corner and looking to make up more, Tim hit the brakes hard heading in to Druids. Unfortunately one of the rear lower wishbone mounts failed sending Tim into the gravel trap with suspension failure.

Thankfully Tim was unharmed and the car returned to the team to be packed away and returned to Swansea. The issue can be resolved back at our Swansea workshop and progress has already been made leaving the team looking forward to the next round of the Monoposto Championship which will see Tim race at Oulton Park for the first time.
