Rounds 1 & 2 Race Report

Donington Park National

Swansea Met Motorsport began their 2013 season on the 27th April at Donington Park Circuit. The weekend was the team’s debut in the Monoposto Championship and the first time many of the members had attended a race weekend. After stripping and re building the car during the winter break the team were confident heading into the weekend.

On Friday the team arrived at the track early evening to set up in the garage and spanner check the car ready for the early scrutineering on Saturday morning. Tents were pitched at the circuit before the team headed into the local town for food.

The first day of racing began early with the car passing scrutineering and heading out onto track at 09:15 for the first qualifying session. After four laps Tim felt the car was down on power and reported gear selection issues when he headed back to the pits after the 15 minute session. Tim qualified 29th.

The schedule for the day meant the team had two hours to resolve the engine and gearbox issues. After inspecting the engine it was clear that it was only running on three cylinders. The engineers then set to work replacing the injector rail which solved this problem. After the gearbox pivot had been tightened and the car had received a spanner check and fuel the team were ready in time for the first race of the weekend.

Heading out onto the track at 11:40, the weather was overcast but with little chance of rain. After a brilliant start, Tim’s lap times were quicker than the surrounding cars and he made up a number of places throughout the race, finishing 12th in class.

With the car back in the pits the engineering team checked it over and ironed out a few small issues. The car was not out until the following morning so the team enjoyed the afternoon’s racing and headed out for a meal in the evening.

The second qualifying for the weekend was at 14:35 on Sunday. Once again the team felt confident watching the car head out for the 15 minute qualifying session. Tim’s lap times were much quicker than the previous day qualifying 14th in class for the final race of the weekend.

The final race of the weekend began well, with Tim making up a few places early on. However the gear selection issue came back causing Tim to select the wrong gear and drop back two places three laps from the end of the race. Tim maintained the position to finish the race 14th in class.

After a promising weekend the team packed up and returned to Swansea, eager to improve the car for the next round of the 2013 championship. The new team worked well together and everyone enjoyed the experience
