2012 F4 Championship: Rounds 9 & 10 Donington Park

After a two month break over the summer, the SMU Motorsport Formula 4 Championship Team was fully prepared to return to Donington Park for rounds 9 and 10 of the 2012 season.

F4 2

With the racing taking place on Sunday 2nd September the team left their base in Swansea early on Saturday morning arriving in time to watch some of the days racing. The evening was spent setting up the tents and checking the car over, before completing a track walk around the circuit and heading out for a meal.

Scrutineering for the team was at 7:50 on Sunday and once again the car passed with no problems. Practice began at 9:25, with Tim completing 12 laps of the circuit and qualifying 7th for both of the races. Tim had posted times in the 1 minute 13s which was promising for the team. Between practice and our first race a bolt came out of the head and needed to be helicoiled. The engineering team dealt with this quickly whilst the management team set about keeping them fuelled with bacon sandwiches. The issue was soon resolved and the whole team was ready to race.

The first race of the day began at 12.05 and Tim had a great start gaining a position in the first lap. Unfortunately the race was red flagged 5 minutes in. When the time came to restart the race the car failed to start due to an electrical issue and unfortunately the team was out of the first race.

During the break between the two races the engineers took another look at electrics and the car was restarting once again.

F4 1The second race of the day began at 16:20, with Tim starting in 7th position again. Despite re- occurring problems with gear selection, the SMU team finished the race in 7th position. Everyone was pleased with the result after a really enjoyable weekend.

The 750 Motor Club Formula 4 Championship was decided at the end of the race with Robbie Watts becoming the 2012 Champion. The whole team sends its congratulations to Robbie!

The SMU team are looking forward to the last race at Snetterton in a month, where their final position in the championship will be decided. Until then work on the car will continue as the current students return to Swansea for the next academic year.
