Donington Park 2012

2012 F4 Championship: Rounds 7 & 8 Donington Park

After the team’s success at Cadwell Park they were back in the workshop finishing the work on the new high nose cone to run with the rear wing that had been used earlier in the season. The great effort that was put in paid off and the car was ready to go to Donington Park for the 7th and 8th round of the Formula 4 championship.

The weather for Donington did not look too promising as the team set off from Swansea on Saturday morning. Arriving at Donington in the afternoon, final checks on the car were performed after unloading and setting up tents in a very muddy field.

With both races taking place on Sunday, the team had an early start passing scrutineering and focussing on the only practice of the day. There had been showers throughout the morning and as a result the track was still too wet to run slick tyres for the practice. Tim completed the 15 minutes of practice qualifying 8th for the first race and 9th for the second, based on his quickest and second quickest lap times of the session.

By the time the car was ready for the first race of the round, the track had dried enough for slick tyres. Tim had a great start in the race gaining a position in the first lap putting him up into 7th.

Unfortunately a gear selection issue arose during the race meaning that the car was unable to keep the pace on the straight sections of the track. Tim finished the race 9th, a good result given the circumstances.

Between the first and second race the engineers had a look at the gear box in hope of finding the cause of the problem. However given the lack of time between races, the cause was unclear but the car seemed to be running better as Tim set off for the second race.

Starting in 9th position, Tim once again had a great start and gained a position during the race, finishing in 8th.  A great result for the team who were pleased with the outcome of the weekend.

Back in Swansea the issue with gear selection has been identified and corrected. The team now have a two month break from the racing, returning to Donington Park at the beginning of September.
