 3rd March 2011 - MIRA Wind Tunnel Testing

With aerodynamic work on the car progressing every week by the BEng year 2 project groups, the team thought it would be an excellent idea to look at wind tunnel testing. Ambitious some may say, however  MIRA – one of the world’s automotive industry’s leading organisations offered us exclusive use of their full scale wind tunnel facility up at their vast headquarters in Warwickshire. The wind tunnel at MIRA is the UK’s only full scale wind tunnel and is used by many high profile automotive companies.

Preparation work was immediately underway and after many hours in the university workshop and computer labs a totally new front wing was made. Computationally proven to be a massive improvement over the existing front wings, it was time to see it in action....

Aerodynamic engineer and designer Justin Morden comments on the results;

“It’s always nice to see a design that has been proven on the computer perform as expected, let alone exceed our expectations and calculations. Overall we saw a 600% improvement in efficiency on the front wing, which we are very pleased about. “

Chief engineer Harley Gasson talks about the experience as a whole:

“Being part of the BEng group working on the aerodynamics of the car, I have been heavily involved with the testing of our new front wing. It is excellent to see our hard work really pay off in the form of such impressive results from the wind tunnel data. However perhaps the best part is actually having this opportunity in the first place. It is an absolutely fantastic experience for us students to be taking part in such an activity and working with a worldwide recognised company. We owe a huge thanks to MIRA, who have provided us with the facilities to help us create what we hope to be competitive car for this season.”
