2nd/3rd August 2014: Pembrey Sports 2000 Festival

After our weekend at Donington, some of the team who are still based close to the university worked hard to get the car race ready for Pembrey. After the issues experienced at Donington, with the help of MCR Race Cars, the UWTSD MCR was fitted with a new  bearing, CV joint and hub and new seals were fitted to the right rear brake caliper and the brakes were bled. We also were able to use the UWTSD 3D printer to add splitter veins to  better manage the airflow around the front wheels.

Pembrey 2

And after all of that we were ready to go! The Team headed to Pembrey for our busy home round. We arrived on the Friday to set up the Hospitality vehicle and then returned to Swansea for the night.

On Saturday morning we went testing to make sure everything was in good working order ready for the racing in the afternoon. Tim went out in 5 lap intervals so that we had constant feedback and could make any changes. Roger also went out in the car and set a fastest lap of 1.02. Both Tim and Roger were happy with how the car handled.

We had a practice session before qualifying but did not go out for it because we were happy with the car and it was raining. It was then time for qualifying. It was a cloudy session but the rain had stopped, there was a bit of contact with another car, causing minor damage to the rear bodywork but nothing too serious. We qualified 13th on the grid and 6th in class.

Pembrey 3 Then it was on to our sprint race which we were lucky enough to have nice weather. We went to assembly without the rear anti roll bar. Our race was delayed due to the Welsh Sports and Saloon Car Championship race being red flagged and thus restarted after one of the competitors had an incident at the last corner. He did not incur too much damage and was fit to race on the Sunday. Our second driver Roger Dowden was also competing and finished 9th after a fantastic race.

Tim had an excellent start to the Sports 2000 race overtaking 4 competitors by the first corner putting us up to P9. Unfortunately due to a poor internet connection getting onto the live timing screens proved to be difficult. Our race was also red flagged and we were to restart 6th on the grid. At the end of the race Tim achieved our best finish in the Sports 2000 Championship! We finished 4th overall and 4th in class!

Then we were ready for our endurance race on Sunday. We once again had a sunny day for racing. Tim went out in the car first and by the time he came in for the driver change we were up in P7. After Roger’s stint in the car we were 9th on the grid and 5th in class for the afternoon’s race. Pembrey 4

Roger went out for first for the race and we started 8th on the grid due to a non starter. During the race there were several yellow flags meaning we dropped to 17th. Once again we experienced connection issues so were unable to access the timing screens but when Roger came in for the driver change, we were in 14th. There were more yellow flags but by the end of the race Tim had gotten us up to 11th. It was not the initial position we had hoped for but we had worn the tyres down to the canvas so were very lucky to have finished the race.

However we had a surprise when we went to the award giving of the Sports 2000 Championship, we found out that despite placing 11th overall we had achieved 3rd in class meaning we achieved our first podium position in the Sports 2000 Championship!

We would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support and to the university for allowing us to use the Marketing vehicle. We had a great weekend at Pembrey circuit with it being the team’s first ever race event there.

Our next round is at Thruxton race circuit, so if you are coming along please let us know as it would be great to have you there!
