28th June 2014: Oulton Park

After the long break between races, the team were glad to be going racing again. We set off for Oulton Park, and despite some of the team trying to remain optimistic, we were in for a wet weekend!

The Team woke up to a drizzly Oulton Park on Saturday and were ready for scrutineering and qualifying and once again we were back out on a race track. After a wet qualifying session leaving Tim with poor visibility we were very happy to qualify 7th on the grid and 6th in Class A of the Duratec championship.

And before we knew it, it was time for our first race. Tim quickly overtook and moved up to P6 putting us 5th in class. However, Tim spun on track as many other competitors did and suffered a puncture to the rear left tyre, meaning we were unable to finish our first race. Tim safely came back to the pits with no further damage. We were also able to purchase a new wet tyre in preparation for race 2, however didn’t need it as our second race was dry enough for us to go out on slicks.

In the long break between races,  the team looked at the brakes after Tim said he was struggling under braking so the team bled the brakes in an attempt to resolve the issue, however upon return to Swansea we found that the brake pedal pivot bolt had tightened meaning that there was residual pressure from the brakes for the duration of the races.

We were also joined by a potential future race engineer/mechanic in the form of Anthony, who was incredibly excited and asked whether he could put the wheels on the car. So with the help of one of our engineers/mechanics Steffan Williams, he did an excellent job of helping us!

And then we were ready for our second race. We were able to go out on slick tyres and started 13th on the gird due to being unable to finish our first race. And we were off, Tim quickly overtook 3 competitors before dropping back down to P13 putting us 5th in class, Tim once again overtook another competitor putting us 12th but we were moved up to 4th in Class A due to the disqualification of another competitor.

On the whole, The Team were incredibly happy with our result despite the puncture and brake problems. We also want to take the time to thank everybody for their on going support, the response we got from everybody was absolutely fantastic and it really shows that our work as a team and as individuals pays off not only on circuit but our followers.

The Team returned to Swansea and resolved all the issues we  had faced and also some work was done with the use of UWTSD’s 3D printer which have meant we have been able to produce some dive planes for the car as used by MCR on their current cars. We hope to further improve on our performance with the use of the dive planes and we be able to test the at our upcoming round at Donington Park. We hope to see some of you there!
