10th May 2014: Sports 2000 Brands Hatch Indy Endurance

After our first round at the Silverstone International circuit, the Team worked very hard to fix the problems that caused a DNF in our first race in order to be able to attend our first mini endurance round of the 2014 season. As ever, the motivation from all the Team meant the problems were quickly resolved and it was onto Brands Hatch.

The Team left a bright and sunny Swansea for the long drive to the Brands Hatch circuit, accompanied by our second driver Roger Dowden. We arrived at an equally warm and sunny Brands Hatch for our first endurance round of the season and set up alongside MCR Race Cars in the paddock.

The Team awoke to a cloudy Brands Hatch and went to scrutineering where it started to rain very lightly so the Team set the car up for a wet qualifying session. As Tim, Roger and The Team headed to the pit lane and the assembly area the weather brightened up. Our qualifying session was delayed due to oil on track meaning some parts of the circuit were still slippery despite the effort from the Marshals and circuit staff to clear the track.

Tim was the first to go out to set a qualifying time, the track was still wet but Tim set his fastest time of 1:00:164. Tim came into the pit lane where the engineers and our drivers performed a very smooth pit stop and driver change leaving us with time to spare. As the track continued to dry, Roger went out for a longer session and set a fastest time of 58:562, meaning we qualified 14th out of a total of 18 competitors.

Before we knew it, it was time to go racing. Once again the weather cleared up for a dry race and all 18 cars that had qualified started with a rolling start and we were off!

53062982-20140510 133137_9754 Tim quickly took 3 grid positions and went from 14th to 11th and was gaining at least a second a lap of the competitors in front, Tim soon took 10th place swiftly followed by 9th as everyone began making their pit stops, after 25 minutes Tim pitted at which point we were in 3rd place and Roger got in the car ready for his first race with UWTSD Team MCR.  Roger was soon up into 10th position but began losing places and went down from 10th to 13th, although he swiftly regained 12th place. We finished the race in 12th place which for our first endurance, we were very pleased with!

For the race Tim felt that the balance of the car had improved, but we suffered problems under braking and upon further inspection after the race we found that the rear wheel bearing had failed which damaged the caliper, meaning that Tim and Roger had no rear brakes. There were also issues with the gearbox meaning Tim and Roger were unable to get the car out of 4th gear, but thankfully they finished the race. Once the car was back in the paddock The Engineers were able to inspect the hub and damage caused, which they are now fixing back in the workshop.

After we had packed up ready for the long drive back to Swansea we were able to watch some of the other races from one of the hospitality boxes which we were able to use thanks to Munro Building Services who were so kind in allowing us to use the box for the weekend. We were able to see some fantastic racing and can’t thank Munro Building Services enough for giving us that opportunity!

53071345-20140510 134642_6462 We then made the long journey back and we got back to a very wet and windy Swansea. The car was to be unloaded on Monday when The Engineers were able to start work in preparation for our next race at Oulton Park.

The Team looked back over the results of the race and we in fact finished 11th after another competitors was disqualified from the race. Which also meant we finished 6th in class!

Overall, despite the issues we faced The Team have once again shown their dedication and hard work paying off. We would once again like to the Munro Building Services for their hospitality and also we’d like to thank Roger Dowden who drove incredibly well and helped us finish our first endurance race!

Our next race is at Oulton Park on the 28th June and is a double header, so we hope to see some of you there!
