After teaching mathematics and ICT in secondary schools in South Wales for 12 years I joined the Education Department at Swansea University. In addition to lecturing in Mathematics Education I was also Director of the MA programme. I transferred to SMU in 2006 where I am currently a Senior Lecturer in Education and a member of the Mathematics Education and Using ICT in support of teaching and learning Research Groups.
I lecture on the PGCE mathematics course and on the Master of Research degree (M.Res.) in Mathematics Education.
I am the co-author of 6 books in the fields of mathematics and assessment, and have published numerous journal articles. My PhD thesis researched the role of reflective discourse in the effective teaching and learning of numeracy. This informed the writing of one of my books: Developing numeracy in the secondary school.
My research interests include:
-
Teaching and learning approaches based on the development of reflective discourse
-
The development of metacognition
-
Interactive teaching
-
Thinking skills
-
The teaching of numeracy
-
The teaching of problem solving and mathematical modelling
-
Assessment for learning
-
Interaction and interactive whiteboards
