I started life working in industry in North Wales and Lancashire before training as a teacher. Before joining SMU as a Reader in Education, I was employed as a Research Fellow by the University of Leicester School of Education and as a Research Assistant and Research Officer at Cardiff University. I am now the Deputy Vice Chancellor of SMU.

I am the author of fifteen books on education in the field of truancy, disaffection, special educational needs, teacher education and professional development. Currently, I chair the Welsh Assembly Review into School Behaviour and Attendance. The Report for the Welsh Assembly Government is due in April 2008. I am the Welsh Editor of the Education Journal and a regular contributor to the TES and other professional periodicals. I am editing the Special Sixtieth Anniversary Edition of Educational Review on Truancy and Antisocial Behaviour.

My major research projects have been in the field of severely handicapped children and their families, persistent school absenteeism and truancy, initial and in-service teacher education, the probationary year, disaffection, bullying, 16 examinations, school organisation, out-of-school hours learning, school effectiveness, one-parent families and bereavement.

I am a regular speaker at national conferences throughout the UK and participate in major professional development training.
