Professor Gareth Elwyn Jones, MBE, MA, MEd, PhD, DLitt, FRHistS.

Emeritus Professor of Education, University of Wales.
Honorary Research Professor, Swansea School of Education.

After teaching history in a Croydon grammar school I returned to Wales to teach successively in Cardiff College of Education, Swansea College of Education, the University of Wales Swansea and the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. Retiring as Professor of Education and Dean of the Faculty of Education in Aberystwyth, I was appointed to an honorary research chair at the University of Wales Swansea. My involvement with the Swansea School of Education and with the Swansea Metropolitan University is maintained at a variety of levels.

My lecturing and research activities in the history of education continue, as does occasional examining of higher degrees, mentoring of research staff and students and refereeing of proposed publications.

I have recently published articles on the history of education in Wales in such journals as the Oxford Review of Education, Journal of Educational Administration and History, History of Education and The Welsh Journal of Education. I currently act as chair of the editorial committee and consultant editor of The Welsh Journal of Education.

I have published more than twenty books, either as author or editor, on the history of Wales and more specifically on the history of education in Wales. These include

  • The Gentry and the Elizabethan State, published by Christopher Davies in 1977

  • Modern Wales, published by Cambridge University Press in 1984 (second edition 1994)

  • The People of Wales (Gomer, 2000), edited with Dai Smith.

  • Controls and Conflicts in Welsh Secondary Education, 1889-1944 (University of Wales Press 1982),

  • Which Nation`s Schools? (University of Wales Press 1990)

  • The Education of a Nation (University of Wales Press 1997)

  • A History of Education in Wales (with Gordon Wynne Roderick, University of Wales Press 2003).

  • Examining the Secondary Schools of Wales, 1896 - 2000 (with the late W Gareth Evans and Robert Smith, in the press).
