Allan Williams gained a BSc (Hons) in Geography, a BSc in Geology and as a Commonwealth Scholar, a PhD in Coastal Geology. He is a chartered engineer, Member of the Institution of Materials, Mining & Metallurgy, London, UK, chartered scientist and a Winston Churchill Fellow, who has supervised >30 PhD and MPhil students and been external examiner for >25 research students. He has published over 300 papers and technical reports, generated over £2M in research grants, coordinated several international research projects e.g. ‘DUNES' under the EC ELOISE programme. Previously he has held chairs at the University of Glamorgan and Bath Spa University, and been a Research Scholar, at the International Hurricane Centre, Florida International University, Miami, Florida, USA and an Erskine Fellow, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand as well as a research scientist at the Universities of Massachusetts and Maryland, USA He is a founder member of MEDCOAST and has been a scientific advisor and consultant to many European universities and EU agencies, for example, the European Commission: Member of the ‘Expert - Evaluator' panel for marine environmental research projects, Committee member of the UK National Aquatic Litter Group (NALG), Scientific Advisor to the DISEPLA Research Group, Instituto Hidrogafico, Lisbon, Portugal, Evaluator for all Portuguese Universities Marine Research Programmes, Fundação para a Ciênciae a Tecnologia, Lisbon, and the UK Councillor for the European Union for Coastal Conservation, He is a referee for a number of leading environmental journals, for example, ‘Jn. of Coastal Research', ‘Ocean and Shoreline Management', ‘Area', ‘Water, Air and Soil Pollution', ‘Coastal Management', ‘Journal of Environmental Management', ‘Shore and Beach', ‘Sedimentology', ‘Estuarine Coastal and Shelf Science', 'Earth Surface Processes and Landforms', ‘Marine Pollution Bulletin' and was the joint co-editor for the Journal of Coastal Conservation (2001- 2004);. He has been a plenary speaker at several international conference e.g., ‘Plastic Debris: rivers to sea', Redondo beach, Ca, USA, 2005, and session chair/facilitator at many international conferences/meetings e.g. Medcoast conferences 2001 - present; ICS meeting, Itapi, Brazil, 2004; International Coastal Dunes Conference, Santander, Spain, 2007; and invited lecturer at many international workshops e.g. Innovative Shore Protection Strategies, Massa, Italy, 2007, and also at NATO Advanced Science Series Workshops. Additionally, many consultancies have been carried out e.g. litter for the UK Environment Agency, Croatian bathing areas for the Rome branch of the WWF, offshore wind farms for Hyder Research, UK, coastal structures for Wardell-Armstrong and Partners, UK, Severn estuary sediment inputs for the Severn Estuary Tidal Power Group. Additionally, he has been an expert witness in several law cases involving coastal issues. As a result of his research, he has been invited to appear on several BBC and ITV television documentaries and radio programmes, as well as giving interviews for many newspaper articles. Several seminal journal articles over a 30 year period, e.g. Marine Geology (1971), Jn. Sed. Pet, (1974) are still cited by current researchers. The Council of Europe has recently commissioned him to write children's books about coastal processes - Sammy Sand Grain (2006) & Peter Pebble (2007) which have been translated into 7 languages. Currently a book on ‘Beach Management' has been commissioned by Earthscan. He is currently a Professorial Research Fellow in the School of Natural & Built Environment in the Faculty of Applied Design & Engineering.
