Art, design and architecture have long been connected to the public memorial, yet the personal memento, while of interest to anthropology, has not been permitted the status of ‘art object' and has rarely been the result of a ‘design process'. Death creates emotional disruption and a series of practical problems to be resolved - what is the role of aesthetics? This research will provide the opportunity to link examples from the history of these two strands of memorialisation, over the last two hundred years, and consider issues of location, scale, media and materials, ritual, role and function.
