Education Research Group/ Mathematics Education

The major focus of this group has been the empirical investigation of key pedagogical themes in mathematics and ICT education and the development of theoretical constructs for the analysis of classroom practices.

The group has built on their earlier research into the teaching of mathematical thinking skills and metacognition, through the use of peer and self assessment and collective reflection in the context of mathematical modelling, to investigate interactive or discourse based approaches to teaching mathematics and in particular, numeracy.

Funded research projects have included:

Developing strategies to help pupils in Key Stage Four improve their own learning performance
Investigating the development of effective revision skills
Improving standards in numeracy
Investigating the degree choices of "A" level mathematics students
Investigating the effect of calculators on secondary mathematics
The development and evaluation of a mathematical thinking skills course ( http://www.swan.ac.uk/education/pgcemaths/btbm/index.html )
The use and practical application of mathematics in Key Stage four

The group has funding from the Gatsby Charitable Trust (£151,800) to develop an enhanced PGCE and CPD programme in mathematics for exceptional practitioners. This is linked to a Master of Research Degree (MRes) in Mathematics Education that the best students enter at the end of their PGCE year, alongside some more experienced teachers. Gatsby Research days are held three times a year, at which teachers who are researching their own practice meet for research training and to present their findings.

Ongoing research and publication from the Mathematics Education research group is focused on the analysis of pedagogies based on reflective discourse and formative assessment, based on data collected in the ITICT project. The group aims to recruit at least four PhD students in the coming year.

Staff participating in this research group include:
