Research Profile

Julia's work is concerned with the translation of textile techniques such as stitching, quilting, patchwork and embroidery into a wire and metal form thus changing its original nature and function but retaining the meaning and decoration.

Recent exhibitions include:

  • Touring exhibition and publication - ‘Stories of the Making'

  • ‘Collect' at the Victoria and Albert Museum

  • Sofa Chicago

  • ‘Abstract Garments' at Contemporary Applied Arts

  • Her work is held in national and international collections.

Research interests include:

In 2005 Ruthin Craft Centre organised Julia's solo touring exhibition Stories in the Making. The exhibition referenced the textiles held and handed down in family collections as well as inspirational writing on textiles by poets and novelists. Julia is currently working on an interpretation of the National Wool Museum's collection of textiles held at Drefach Felindre in West Wales. Many of the narrative ideas begun in her previous work are being further elaborated on and developed into a forty foot metal drawing which will also have attached to it drawings digitally printed onto wool.
