Welcome to the research pages of Swansea School of Education
Background: Swansea School of Education was formed in September 2004 as part of the reconfiguration of Higher Education in Wales. Prior to that date, educational research activity in Swansea was divided between the Department of Education in University of Wales Swansea (UWS) and the School of Education at Swansea Institute of Higher Education (SIHE).
Following re-organisation, Swansea School of Education combined the strengths of the old UWS Department of Education with the existing School of Education at SIHE. Although the refurbishment of buildings and movement of staff and courses caused significant disruption in 2006, the advantages of bringing a core group of educational researchers together on one site in an organisation that values research in Education as a key aspect of its mission are now beginning to be seen.
Research Strategy The mission statement of the new School includes as one of its three key aims to:
Undertake and publish research of national and international standing in the field of education.
To support this, in 2006 a Centre for Research in Education, directed by Dr Howard Tanner, was established in the new School.
Centre for Research in Education Director Dr Howard Tanner
The Centre is based around three research groups:
Mathematics Education, led by Dr Howard Tanner;
Using ICT in support of learning and teaching, led by Dr Steve Kennewell;
Management, Leadership and administration, led by Dr Chris Turner.
Research groups work collaboratively to support research, publication, grant application, and the recruitment of higher degree students. The Centre has a target to recruit 15 research degree students next year.
Research seminars The School funds a vibrant and well attended research seminar programme of between six and eight sessions per year. The programme draws upon expertise within the Centre, but also includes many seminars from eminent scholars from other universities within the UK and from overseas. Seminars are open to the public and researchers from other institutions and teachers from local schools are welcome to attend. The core members of all three research groups have good records of publication in international refereed journals and books, and have disseminated research activity through national and international conferences and other relevant outlets.
History of Education Professor Gareth Elwyn Jones has been closely associated with the Swansea School of Education since its establishment. While there is no history of education research group in the School - indeed no such group exists in any institution in Wales - he continues to be regarded as the leading authority on the subject working in Wales.
