John is retired from teaching after 25 years in the post of Senior Lecturer in Instrumentation and Control Engineering. During that time and with previous industrial experience, he was involved in Condition Monitoring research in areas such as stress analysis by whole-field laser speckle interferometry, thermal imaging, ultrasonics, sound and vibration in rotating machines, and rolling element bearing failure prediction, in collaboration with the petrochemical, steel and nuclear power industries. He was awarded the PhD for his contribution to characterizing respiratory sounds in relation to sleep-disordered breathing. He is now a Research Associate at Swansea Metropolitan University, and is developing non-invasive acoustic analysis methods for recognising symptoms for a variety of upper and lower respiratory disease.
