I taught Science in four secondary schools in Kent and Sussex for seventeen years between 1973 and 1990. In my last post, I was Head of Science for almost five years. I joined the Education Department in the University of Wales, Swansea in 1990 as a lecturer in education and then transferred to the Swansea School of Education, Swansea Metropolitan University in June 2006 as a Senior Lecturer in Education.

I currently teach on the secondary PGCE Science course and act as its team leader. This now accepts the largest number of trainee Science teachers in Wales. I also teach on MA Education courses concerned with leadership and management (for example 'Leading the Learning'). I am in charge of PhD and M.Phil research students who wish to study in the School of Education. My main research interests include:

  • the professional development of teachers

  • middle leadership: its meaning and how it is enacted in various school contexts;

  • the mentoring and coaching of teachers;

  • the management of education in all sectors;

  • trying to understand more about the concept of leadership and its relationship to the exercise of power as well as the establishment of work-based culture and values.

I lead the Leadership, Management and Administration Research Group within the School of Education. The members of this group have a very wide range of research interests including the management of pupil attendance and truancy issues, the professional development of teachers and the impact of Philosophy for Children (P4C) on their learning. The most recent meeting of this group took the form of a research seminar in June 2007 which focussed on the professional development of teachers in Wales. There were presentations made about current and future policy initiatives in relation to professional development, especially the Chartered Teacher Initiative. There was also a presentation of the findings from some research done on dialogic teaching in primary schools.
