Andrea Liggins was educated at Plymouth College of Art and Design, Westminster University and Manchester Metropolitan University. She holds a doctorate from the University of Wales for her research into the aesthetics of landscape photography and the role played by photography in environmental decision-making.

Liggins was inaugural Chair of the Association of Photography in HE and in this role National Advisor in photographic education until 2002 to CHEAD, CoSaaD, RSA, she is presently an advisor to the Arts Council of Wales, the HEA-ADM, the Royal Photographic Society in Art, Design and Media, member of advisory panel for the Welsh National Assembly on the Creative Industries, a QAA subject reviewer and Chair of the Visual Arts panel for the City and County of Swansea. Liggins is the Director of the Swansea Centre for Innovation in Photography and Video, and the Creative Industries Research and Innovation Centre.

Research interests include documentary and landscape photography; the Baroque aesthetic applied to photography; pedagogy of art, design and media; creativity into science and technology.
