A local charity is calling on the public in Swansea to come forward with their memories of the Tower Ballroom, which was based in the Townhill area of the city. A new Arts Council of Wales-funded community project called 'REMEMBERING THE TOWER BALLROOM, TOWNHILL' has been launched by Jen Wilson, a historian at Jazz Heritage Wales, based at Swansea Metropolitan University. Working closely with the Phoenix Centre, which now occupies the site of the old ballroom, Jen is gathering stories, memories and photographs from people living in Townhill and Mayhill who remember dancing to the big bands and rock bands at the Tower. The Phoenix Centre will be hosting a Tower Ballroom Open Day on Friday 10th February, from 10am until 4pm. Jen Wilson said: "People are invited to bring their memories and photographs to the Open Day and refreshments will be available. We hope that enough material can be gathered to mount an exhibition and eventually increase website access. "During the project a free evening's entertainment is being planned, to be held in a local venue. Music will be supplied by the superb Women in Jazz Allstars Swing Band, the first all-woman big band in Swansea since the Second World War. Performing arts, photography and web development students from Swansea Met will also be involved in the project."
