Entry QualificationsThe ideal academic qualification, in addition to the statutory Grade C or above in GCSE Mathematics and English (or equivalent), is a good initial degree in English.Applications will also be considered from those holding a joint honours degree in which English Language, English Literature or a related subject forms a major part.
Course DescriptionThis one year full-time programme will equip trainees to teach English within the 11-16 age range in a variety of schools and colleges (including Welsh medium if requested). The content of the course has been designed in conjunction with the subject mentors in our partnership schools. It, therefore, complies with the requirements of the National Curriculum for Wales and for England. There is a focus on the general elements of English teaching:
A wide variety of pedagogical approaches which support the teaching of English is studied, including drama and the technologies which enhance communication and the retrieval of information (ICT). Trainees are encouraged to research current approaches to teaching English, but also to be inventive and innovative in producing teaching materials, engaging pupils and making this core subject lively and relevant. Focus is also placed on teachers' accountability and, linked to this, on assessing pupils' work, recording those assessments and reporting on them to pupils/parents/guardians. Learning to plan lessons, deliver them and manage classes forms an integral part of the course as a whole. There is a strong emphasis on meeting the diverse range of pupils' needs and on bringing out the best in each individual: on lighting candles rather than filling vessels. This is linked, in turn, to encouraging pupils to be aware and proud of their own cultural roots and to celebrate diversity.
