PGCE Secondary Subjects - Art and Design PDF Print E-mail

Entry Qualifications

  • GCSEs in English and Mathematics at Grade C or above or equivalents.

  • A degree in an area of Art and Design or a degree with a significant proportion of Art and Design units/modules plus relevant experience.

  • Competence in using ICT (e.g. Art and Design packages, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email, www) is usually expected.

  • All applicants must meet the Secretary of State's requirements for 'physical and mental fitness to teach'

Course Description

This one year full-time programme will equip trainees to teach Art and Design within the 11-18 age range in a variety of schools and colleges (including Welsh medium). In particular, trainees will prepare to teach Key Stage 3 National Curriculum Art, GCSE, AS and A Level Art and Design, which involves delivering a full and exciting spectrum of creative experiences.

Trainees are encouraged to refine and enhance their Art and Design knowledge and skills through a variety of theoretical and practical sessions. Planning, teaching and learning, assessment and classroom management issues are integrated in order to help develop lively, innovative and creative teachers of Art and Design

  • Strong links with the Glynn Vivian, Plantasia Tropical Planthouse and Dan-Yr-Ogof caves.

  • Opportunities to attend the Welsh medium schools and tutorials can be conducted in Welsh.

  • Practising artists, teachers, national trainers and key professionals are invited to contribute to the programme.

  • Trainees are required to spend two weeks as Artists-In-Residence in primary schools.

Tuition Fees 2012/2013

PGCE Programmes - £9,000

Students will not have to pay up-front for their tuition. Tuition fees will be paid for by a loan which students will only start to repay once they have left their course and are earning over £21,000 a year. Eligible Welsh and non-UK EU domiciled students will be entitled to receive a fee grant to cover fees above £3,465. This grant is non-means-tested and does not have to be repaid. These incentives will be variable depending on degree qualification. Eligible postgraduate students with a first class degree will recieve the highest funding levels, with progressively lower amounts for those with a 2:1 or 2:2.
