Programme Design

Educational Studies looks at a broad range of educational issues and develops understanding of learning at all ages, including lifelong learning through a variety of contexts. The degree will equip you with the understanding of educational policy, process and curriculum, along with the knowledge that is needed by professionals in education. Some of the issues explored are diversity in education, creativity and educational research. The Educational Studies programme will combine the academic study of education with the vocational preparation for a range of careers in education, starting first with a pathway suitable for preparation for careers in school-based education.

Students who meet all the the criteria and wish to become primary school teachers will be guaranteed a place on the PGCE Primary programme, subject to a satisfactory interview. Offers of a place are dependent, in part, on meeting the entry requirements of the PGCE course.

Programme Structure

The first year consists of six compulsory modules on overarching themes in education. These modules will provide you with a sound background for further study in education. In Year 2 you will continue to study key themes in education but will also choose between two pathways - Curriculum Studies and Youth and Community. In the third year there are two options within the Curriculum Studies pathway - the first focuses on the teaching and learning experienced by 3-7-year-olds and the second looks at the educational experiences of
7-11-year-olds. You will also do a research based module which will require you to write on an aspect of education of interest to you. In order to do this you will spend some time in a school or other relevant work place. There may also be the opportunity to complete this time in a school in the United States.

Employment Opportunities

The single honours degree will be attractive to those who are interested in all forms of education, training, communication and human development and can lead to a variety of career options including teaching, educational administration, youth and community and educational welfare.
