The School was established in September 2004 by combining the Department of Education, University of Wales Swansea with the School of Education of Swansea Metropolitan University. In September 2009, the Swansea School of Education formed a partnership with University of Wales, Trinity St. David to form the South West Wales Centre for Teacher Education (SWWCTE). The School offers a wide range of full-time and part-time programmes as well as opportunities to be involved in educational research The School is part of the Faculty of Humanities and within the Faculty there are a number of undergraduate degrees and joint honours degrees. Students who are interested in education as a subject will be interested in studying on the Educational Studies degree. Students who wish to become primary school teachers can combine this degree with a further PGCE qualification, providing that they meet all the set criteria. A similar package is available for secondary PGCE English to students who study the joint honours degree in Educational Studies and English. Other joint honours combinations are Educational Studies and Psychology and Counselling and Educational Studies. The route into school teaching is through a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). The runs both primary and secondary PGCE programmes. If you wish to teach in a further or higher education establishment or if your job involves education and training then you should enrol on one of the programmes run by the education and training division. All our programmes are run in partnership with schools and colleges across South Wales, helping us to provide a top quality training experience. For those working in schools as learning support assistants the School offers a three year part time foundation degree. Students who successfully complete this qualification may, if they wish, go on to study the final year of an Educational Studies degree. Currently the degree being offered is the Counselling and Educational Studies joint honours degree. For those wishing to develop their understanding of education and improve their professional expertise, the School offers a range of in-service or master's degree programmes. The type of in-service programmes vary from those that lead to a qualification such as the Graduate Diploma in Education to stand-alone programmes that are not linked to any award. There are plenty of opportunities for teachers and other professionals working in an educational setting to update their skills and extend their knowledge. The School has staff with considerable expertise in a number of areas of education and is able to offer supervision for those wishing to carry out research towards a MRes degree (in mathematics education), a M.Phil.degree or a Ph.D degree.
