Duration: 3 Years UCAS Course Code: WX43 Admissions Tutor: Richard Knapp This is a Joint Honours degree which combines Drama and Educational Studies on an equal basis.
Programme Design: Drama
The Drama component offers you the opportunity to explore your critical understanding of the subject in a manner that will complement your work in the Educational Studies component with which it would be combined. It is a selection of modules with some elective choices designed as to allow those with an interest in Drama as a means for developing critical understanding of the world but without the level of focus on performance skills. The elective choices are designed to offer some specialised focus on the disciplines of applied performance practice, directing or arts management which may appeal to those Educational Studies students who might consider following career routes in such areas.
Though Drama as a component has no specific vocational outcome it does act as a platform for a number of graduate career routes, these include Teaching, Community
Arts, Arts Marketing and Management, Directing, Theatre in Education and Arts Enterprise. Around thirty percent of students graduating from the School apply for routes into teaching on an annual basis and now that the teacher education provision within the Faculty has extended to include a range of secondary and primary PGCE courses it is expected that increasing numbers of our students will take up this option. While English is a core curriculum subject there is a distinct advantage in students being able to offer another subject including Drama which is often delivered within an English department in a school. Also - combinations with Counselling and Psychology offer potential career routes in Drama therapy and other related careers.
Programme Design: Educational Studies
Education is studied as a social science and you will develop vocationally valued transferable skills through the intellectually rigorous study of educational processes, systems and approaches, and the cultural, societal, political and historical contexts within which they are embedded. Learning is facilitated through lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials. Innovative assessment strategies are employed in addition to examinations and essays.
You are introduced to key themes in education during Year 1 of the degree.
You study policy and practice in education and consider how young people learn through ICT and other forms of visual communication. In Year 2 you continue to study overarching themes in education particularly those related to Wales and other bilingual countries. The third year provides you with the opportunity to either carry out an in-depth study of two areas of the primary curriculum or study the methods used to solve problems in education. You may be offered the opportunity of a work/school placement in the third year.
