Why choose Advertising and Brand Design and why at SMU Advertising permeates our lives - it is all around us, and constantly confronts us. Advertising and Branding is a challenging profession that encompasses a broad range of disciplines but above all requires an ability to communicate and inform. This 'art of persuasion' requires innovative individuals. You need to be interested in a wide range of alternative media and the opportunities that these can offer - and passionate about ways to creatively advance and promote a product or service. This exciting course offers you the chance to be part of this creative industry. Working closely with the specialism visual communication, you will explore and develop skills that enable you to formulate and devise different ways of creating your message and develop a personal portfolio that helps you to get that first break. Developed out of the strengths of the School of Visual Communication, the Advertising and Branding course has a wealth of creative knowledge. Experienced staff and practioners who deliver a programme that will prepare your for a career in the advertising industry. During the course you will learn the process of visual and verbal communication, and develop these skills to apply them within your project work. You will learn how to communicate your ideas to others with confidence. • Built upon substantial experience of academics and practitioners More about the course The course is a young one, started in 2005, but in that time the course has grown in reputation. Our students are encouraged to take part in Global competitions and have been successful in achieving awards. The atmosphere on the course is one of passion and excitement for the subject. External practitioners who have worked with students on ‘live briefs' have praised the professionalism of our students. Our student's benefit from small numbers in our studio-based modules. Studio work is carried out in a friendly atmosphere and informal discussion forum. Modules are delivered via workshops, group sessions and individual tutorials. Lectures are usually based around discussion forums and experimental exercise. We encourage team- work, but also mentor students in their personal development. We have an ‘open door' policy; this allows students to contact their lecturers when they need to. We have strong links with the SMU Business School, this allows students to develop their ability to work with industry with particular understanding of the marketing mix. We are members of the D&AD University Network, which brings knowledge to the course and development of current issues, industry trends and awards to our students. Course structure & content The Faculty has excellent industrial links and there is a regular programme of visiting speakers and professionals. Live projects are an integral part of the course and these help you to engage with professional bodies before you graduate. All work is project based. Students are expected to demonstrate their understanding in the form of practical project work. All assessment is based on 100% coursework. As well as formal lectures there is also a programme of individual tutorials throughout the three years. Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 In Year 3 students are asked to curate their own degree show in Swansea. High achieving students are also asked to attend the D&AD ‘New Blood' exhibition in London. Facilities & Resources Students have access to their own computer suite that accommodates 20 MACs, this is the area where computer-based studio work and workshops are taught, students also have open access to progress their own work. A studio designed for workshop activities and presentations and a Year 3 studio, here students have their own space, which allows them to work individually or in teams. We encourage cross department projects and students have taken advantage of other facilities in the Faculty including: TV studio, photography studio and equipment, surface pattern printing facilities. The Staff on the course have had extended careers in practise and are continually working on research projects. Students are encouraged to take part in this research as part of their overall learning experience. Beyond this specialist equipment, you will also have access to an extensive range of facilities including an excellent library, open-access computer suits and optional workshops in other areas within the art school.
