This Higher National Certificate (HNC) has been designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of today's construction industry in anticipation of employment at managerial level. In addition, the programme provides the foundation for students in pursuit of a Higher National Diploma (HND) or Degree appropriate to the built and natural environment.

As well as giving entry to further higher study, successful completion of the programme allows exemption from the Level 1 Foundation Studies Examination (Associate Membership) of the Chartered Institute of Building, provided students can demonstrate evidence of at least two years practical experience at a higher technician level.

Programme members will need to successfully complete ten modules for the award of a HNC.Of these ten modules, five are core. The remaining five modules are a mixture of compulsory and programme specific themes covering both design and production.Assessment will take the form of:
assignments, which can relate to an individual's work placement/practical activities (i.e. surveying and
laboratory work); and end-of-module examination (i.e. time controlled assignment).

The construction industry is dynamically driven by developments world-wide, in particular the need to
conserve limited resources and develop new, innovative ways of working. In essence, a key theme has
hit the industry - sustainability, has led to the concept of sustainable construction. Such a theme has
been integrated into the programme structure.

Core Modules (delivered over the two years):
• Design Principles and Application (Year 1)
• Science and Materials (Year 1)
• Management Principles and Applications (Year 2)
• Health, Safety andWelfare (Year 2)
• Group Project (Year 2)

In addition, programme members will complete the following compulsory and programme specific modules:
• ConstructionTechnology A (Year 1)
• Site Surveying (Year 1)
• Measurement A (Year 1)
• ConstructionTechnology B (Year 2)
• Building Services (Year 2)

This programme also allows course members the opportunity to research an individual piece of work
relevant to their employment, for example, typical topics might include ‘green' construction, construction's impact on the environment or energy conservation.

Other modules forming part of similar programmes may also be available to course members wishing
to experience a civil engineering or building conservation theme. In most cases, these modules will be
studied in addition to the Building Studies programme.
