This part-time course provides a strong academic base for trainee Technician Civil Engineers in the construction industry.

The programme is, initially, broad based to provide students with the knowledge expected of a technician employed within the industry. Academic study will be supplemented by practical laboratory work in materials testing, surveying field work and computer aided draughting. Opportunity is offered in later stages to develop more advanced skills in relation to a chosen field of Civil Engineering such as structural design, hydraulics and highway construction.
Following the successful completion of a HNC in Civil Engineering, students with appropriate grades can continue with further study to obtain an honours degree in civil engineering or other honours degrees in the Faculty.

Civil Engineering Technicians could find employment as construction managers, highway superintendants, highway designers, clerk of works, laboratory technicians, construction industry specialist or project managers.

Assessment
Modules are assessed through coursework, assignments, project work and end of semester examinations in the first and final year.
Professional Accreditation

This course satisfies the educational requirements for entry into the Institution of Civil Engineers as a Technician Member. Satisfactory completion of a two or three year period of Initial Professional Development and professional review report enables diplomats to use the designation TMICE.

Student Experience
This programme was devised to enable students to comprehend the principles and processes operating in the built and natural environment in order to make informed judgements on the effects of different environmental, construction and conservation practices.
