Programme Design

This programme was started in 1998 and was the first motorsport engineering degree course in the world. Swansea Metropolitan University (then Swansea Institute) was awarded the Service Industry award by the Motorsport Industry Association in 1999 for leading this educational initiative in motorsport education.

The historical background to our expertise in this field dated back to 1996 when one of our two Team Darrian GT 3s won what was to become the British GT Championship. Since then, numerous competitive activities have been undertaken by Swansea Metropolitan University-backed teams and individual students. These have included the Locost championship and the UK Formula Student competition. Project cars are built and developed throughout the academic year.

Graduates of the programme have found employment throughout the motorsport industry including Prodrive, Triple Eight Race Engineering and Pi Research, along with Honda F1, BMW F1, Red Bull F1 and Mitsubishi Raliart motorsport teams.

The BEng Motorsport Engineering and Design, the BEng Automotive Engineering and the BEng Motorcycle Engineering programmes all have common themes of Engineering Design and Analysis of Power Train, Chassis and Suspension Systems related to the specific programme being followed. Individual / group projects and subject specific assignment work enable the student to tailor the programme to their own needs and career aspirations.

Entry Requirements

To be read in conjunction with this page

For our BEng degrees, our offers are based on 240 points from numerate or technical A level subjects, to include Maths or Physics at Grade B or above. We will accept a National Diploma, Certificate, two National Awards or the new 14-19 Diploma in Technical subjects, but 60 points of the 240 must come from A level/AS Maths or Physics. Providing you can achieve the points required, two A levels would be sufficient if at grade B with 60 points made up from other qualifications. Generally, we would expect you to achieve the points required from three A levels. We will not accept NVQ Level 3 or Access courses for the above degrees but would for our BSc, HND and Foundation Entry programmes. GCSE Maths at grade C or above is also required.

Other Skills Considered

Our offers are not solely based on academic results. We take your skills, achievements and life experience into consideration. In such cases, they must provide evidence of capacity to pursue the course successfully. We like to give such applicants every opportunity to show that they have the motivation and ability to succeed in their chosen programme.

Swansea Metropolitan University is a Motorsport Academy UK recognised educator (HE) and a partner of EEMS (Energy Efficient Motorsport).
