Humanities Research Group/ Centre for Research in Applied Psychology and Counselling

The Centre for Applied Research in Psychology and Counselling was formally launched in 2007.

The Centre's staff have a number of research specialisms including:

• The identification and modelling of stress in professional groups;

• Stress in parents caring for a disabled child

• Issues affecting young people with neurological conditions when in contact with the police

• The accessibility and readability of information available to parents with a brain-injured child

• Factors which cause high levels of stress in parents caring for a child diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, Down's Syndrome, Autism, Tourette's Syndrome or Aspergers

• The applications of electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback with specific emphasis on ADHD and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

• Predicting long-term outcome after TBI.

• Effects of ventro-medial frontal cortex damage regarding executive dysfunction.

• Comparisons of schizotypal traits and their relation to executive functioning.

These specialisms have already attracted approximately twenty research students working for MPhil or PhD degrees. The students are both from the UK and overseas with some studying on a part-time basis whilst others are enrolled on a full-time basis and are being funded from a variety of sources, including charities and international government agencies.
