"Unreliable Truths is a major exhibition which includes the work of some of Wales’ leading lens-based practitioners. At the core of the exhibition there is an exploration of the ways in which artists use the medium of photography to challenge, transform and illuminate their chosen subject matter. In this context, the digital age is said to have done away with notions of ‘truth’ and the capturing of ‘reality’; however the artists in this exhibition illustrate that lens-based practitioners have always challenged and stretched the limits of such narrow definitions."
Karen MacKinnon, Exhibition Officer Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea
Part of the 2008 Swansea Festival of Music and The Arts, Unreliable Truths is the first major creative collaboration between the internationally respected Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and the School of Photography and Video here at SMU. The exhibition includes a series of related events such as artist’s talks, and discussions are underway with a view to touring the show. The exhibition is accompanied by a lavishly produced 96 pages catalogue which is available from the gallery bookshop.
A symposium on Friday the 28th of November will accompany the exhibition, and will include established and emerging lens-based theorists and practitioners such as Joanna Lowry, Russell Roberts, Hugh Adams and Kevin Newark. Kevin is an ex-graduate of the School of Photography and Video, and is one of the 2008 winners of the prestigious Jerwood Photography Award. To coincide with the Unreliable Truths exhibition and symposium, SMU will also be acting as one of the venues of the 2008 Jerwood exhibition, which will be on show in The Dynevor Centre for Art, Design and Media from 31st October until 12th December.
