Art, Science, Philosophy & Technology Interactions

This interdisciplinary research area investigates the interface between science, philosophy, technology and the arts. The projects included in this area have had major support from The Wellcome Trust, The Arts & Humanities Research Council, The Arts Council of Wales and The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, to explore, research, develop, exhibit, tour and publish a series of artists interventions into normally closed and exclusive spaces such as the Dissecting Room, the Anatomical Museum, the Hospital Operating Theatre, and the Medical Research Laboratory. The research is being led by Dr. Karen Ingham, Reader in Art and Science Interactions. Outputs include 'Death's Witness' (Ffotogallery 2000), 'Anatomy Lessons' (Dewi Lewis Publishing 2004), 'Vanitas' in 'Stilled' (IRIS/Ffotogallery 2006), Narrative Remains (Wellcome Trust 2009) and Wonder Chamber (2012). For a full list of public outputs see Ingham's website or visit the Art and Design Research pages. The Senior Research Associate for this area is Susan Aldworth, an artist whose practice is widely exhibited and published. Aldworth's investigation of neuro-imaging and 'neuro-culture' forms part of a collaborative research project with Ingham, SenseLess, which uses time-based arts to explore questions of embodiment. Also associated with the research area is PhD candidate Brett Aggersberg whose investigation questions the problems arising from the curation and 'value' systems of contemporary electronic arts in the UK.
