With the Feldenkrais Method fast gaining recognition as a somatic discipline/ practice that is suitable for training in performing arts within the UK Higher Education sector, this research aims to explore and document this developing practise, looking at specific approaches adopted by various Feldenkrais Practitioners in their work with actors, dancers and performers in general. The Feldenkrais Method employs Awareness through Movement and Functional Integration as means of enabling students to experience the transformative miracle of efficient, integrated and aesthetically pleasing movement. Functional Integration is a hands-on approach that enables the practitioner to use his/her own physical organisation and experience to guide the student to discoveries. Awareness through Movement on the other hand, is usually experienced through group lessons that involves verbal instructions in that exploratory journey to a more efficient and functional use of the whole body in movement.

Key to the adoption of Feldenkrais Method in Higher Education is its perceived usefulness for developing pedagogical ideas – as a pedagogical tool - and offering dynamic approaches to learning that complement, and often challenge established modes of teaching and learning that is body-centred and somatic. The dissemination of outcomes will take the form of a conference presentation, workshop demonstration and peer-reviewed journal publication. It is hoped that the results, as well as other useful resources/ links will be made readily accessible to other colleagues involved in performer training in Higher Education through the internet and the production of a resource pack.
