The Freedom of Information Act 2000 is intended to promote a culture of openness and accountability amongst public authorities by providing rights of access to the information held by them. Universities fall within the definition of a public authority under the term of that Act. Section 19 of the FOI Act details the duty all public authorities have to adopt and maintain a Publication Scheme, to publish information in accordance with its scheme, and from time to time review its publication. Swansea Metropolitan University has adopted the Information Commissioner's ‘Model Publication Scheme for Universities'.

This Scheme is not meant to give a definitive or exhaustive list. The University endeavours to provide as much information as possible; however, there are occasions when we cannot place this information on the SMU Website. Generally this occurs in cases where:

  • The information potentially contravenes the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998, is exempt under one of the FOI or Environmental Information Regulations (EIRs) exemptions, or its release is prohibited under another statute.

  • When it would be impractical or resource-intensive to prepare the material for routine release.

  • When it does not hold or produce the information at this moment in time.

Most of the information detailed in this scheme is available free via the web link shown against the specific record. If you have difficulties accessing those links, please contact us and we will send you a copy of the document, although we may need to charge a fee if the document in question is very lengthy (see our charges policy at  5.12. Doc 1 (PDF) e-mail or write to us and we will send you full details). All records listed are available as paper copies upon application, or, with prior arrangement, for viewing at this University.
